Welcome to Northeast Physical Therapy
Your stop for recovery and pain relief
What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy is a form of treatment performed by a licensed health care professional which helps reduce pain and improve mobility. In most cases, a professional physical therapist can help you address your source of pain with no need for surgery, even reducing your reliance on medication to manage your pain.
How can Physical Therapy help me?
The overall goal of physical therapy is to improve your ability to move through day-to-day life. If you have a sedentary office job, physical therapy can help you manage neck, back, and shoulder pain likely to form from poor posture or from sitting in one position too much. If you have a warehouse job requiring you to lift and move boxes frequently, a physical therapist can help you reduce the pain that can put on your whole body.
Physical therapists use specific exercises to address the specific pain your body is feeling. They even teach you some exercises that are safe to do on your own that extend the benefits of physical therapy. If you have a health issue that effects your walking, going up and down stairs, getting out of bed, or lifting or carrying objects, you need a physical therapist to help you restore your physical function.
In the case that you do require a surgery, physical therapy can help the recover process afterwards.
What to expect in Physical Therapy
First, you should only work with physical therapists who have a license in your state. Your body is a complex system, and you risk hurting your body working with someone who doesn't have proper training. Professional physical therapists can also work in different settings, whether they are in a hospital for post-surgery, at schools to aid with athletes' training and recover, or in private practices.
When you visit with a physical therapist, they will first discuss your symptoms, causes of your issues, and your day-to-day routines. Depending on that, they customize a treatment plan to improve your mobility and reduce any pain. A physical therapist can help you improve your balance, mobility, strength, flexibility, and coordination.
If you have any pain or swelling, they will prioritize reducing that through exercises and techniques like hot or cold packs or electrical stimulation. In some cases, these treatments temporarily cause soreness or swelling, but that is normal.
Some exercises are simple and can be done at home. Your physical therapist will teach you the relevant exercises and recommend how often you do them. It is important to follow your therapist's instructions closely, as doing too much could harm you depending on the condition plaguing you.
Finally, it's possible you will come to physical therapy and do not know the cause of your health issues. Your physical therapist can work with you to narrow down the source of your pain or discomfort to hopefully treat the issue at the source. Some tests they may perform on you include:
Aerobic capacity/endurance
Anthropometric characteristics
Arousal, attention, and cognition
Assistive and adaptive devices

Environmental, home, and work (job/school/play) barriers
